Vertically extend your windows with dual monitor.. possible?

#1 Post by daeojkim » Thu Apr 21, 2005 8:36 am

When we use dual monitor we generally extend our desktop horizontally. Is it possible to extend it vertically?
I was thiking of hanging a LCD monitor on the wall right above the TP with extended desktop upwards. I think it works better to view documents or long pdf files.

Is this possible?

EDIT: 5 seconds after I asked this question, I figured it out... I should really try harder to figure out on my own before asking questions... LOL.

Basically you can go to display settings and drag the "2" window above the "1" monitor...

This is definately possible. I run a four monitor configuration off of two cards on my main desktop...I haven't ever tried stretching them vertically however. I would test it but my setup is a bit of a hastle to get just right and don't want to have to readjust everything :)

If you go here: http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/forum/forums.asp and go to the Multipe Monitors forum I imagine you will get your answer (with specifics) reasonably quick...tho I am sure many others on this forum can also provide the info as well. I am positive you can do this easily...just not certain if you need something like MultiMon (which I purchased from that site...and it works exceptionally well) to make it work.

EDIT: I am a dummy...I should have read you post more carefully since you allready figured it out :)

Sure you can. Just go to the settings tab on the Display Properties page, and you can position any monitor relative any other monitor - left, right, top, bottom, top-left, bottom-right, etc. etc.

I'm using ultramon and an external 19" lcd w/ the minidock. I can't find a way to have a dual monitor setup w/ the 19" as primary (so it has the start menu).

I basically just want the 14" to show IM windows and my music while I'm working on the primary screen. Is that possible?

Normally you would simply right click on your desktop - settings tab - highlight the monitor you wish to make primary and then check the box (below the sliding scale for resolution) "Use this device as my primary monitor". Unless something with the doc changes something? Once you do that, you can then go into UltraMon and make sure you have Use Smart Task Bar selected (assuming you want a taskbar on both screens). Unlock the task bar with your start button (right click anywhere in the task bar) and drag it to the new monitor you just made primary.

For some reason that box is grayed out...

That would be the rub.

Right click the monitor that is greyed out...does it have "attached" checked?

I don't have a thinkpad yet, so I can't tell you a sure answer...but, you should be able to select what monitor you want to use in the advanced option in settings and right click the screen you want to use as your primary...that is how I used to do it with my desktop.
