t60p $200 good price and bad power sources?

#1 Post by fefrie » Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:16 pm

I just sorta "won" a t60p t7200. It comes with 3gb, and a 9c batt (60min) :(

I have the opportunity to refuse. Is $200 including shipping a good price,

and it comes with a off brand power source.

Doing some googling, I have a question, are t60 power sources faulty with a tendency to go bad/fray?

The off brand AC adapters are known for being poorly made and they tend to overheat, short out, and various other faults. Sometimes they even kill the ThinkPad they are attached to when they fail. One the other hand, genuine Lenovo AC adapters tend to be fairly safe and durable.

As for the price...well that is for you alone to decide. If you are willing to pay that much for what you are getting, then it's good for you. If it has a 15" UXGA display in good condition, it would be worth more to some people than others, but ultimately the decision is yours. Does it have the features you want at a price your willing to pay?

It's just a standard 14. I'll take it to mean that you say no.

I guess I'll hold off. Off brand power source, bulky 9 cell batt (of which I almost never use) and your non commital of great price, and i'll hold off for now.

Without knowing more about the machine's condition it's tough to say. If it's drop-dead-gorgeous it might be worth the $$$.

$250 is pretty much the limit nowadays for a top-of-the-line 14" T60p unit, and not an easy sell at that...but that figure would call for a T7600/V5250 combo, wireless N, decent size 7200rpm HDD etc...and yes, a genuine 90W Lenovo adapter...

I guess I'll hold of for a bit for now. Still working with a t42 that seems to be able to crunch my simple hd video editing.

If I don't feel awsome about it, there's no need to get it right?

I was leaning towards a t7600 anyways.

Your money, your call. T7600 is nice for bragging rights, but not much else...

Honestly, if you're looking for a 14" unit, a T61 with Intel graphics is a much better idea IMO. A lot more future-proof...by the standards of a 6-year old, sub-$350 laptop...

I'd like a t61 maybe, but I read that the GPU can go faulty. So unless it has an ATI video chip, i'm not really interested.

I've had a lot of money dissapear into nVidia chipsets

No T61 was ever built with an ATi GPU...it's Intel or nVidia...

Such a machine with Intel graphics - when configured in an intelligent manner - will more than suffice for just about anything, short of serious gaming and video encoding...

If it comes with the 1600x1200 uxga IPS (based on the other specs you listed I don't believe it does), I would do it. That is a great screen even by today's standards.

If not, it's really a toss up.
