Dial-home applications?

#1 Post by benz » Thu Apr 21, 2005 12:25 pm

I am looking for a compact, discreet program that I can leave running at all times in the background of Windows, which, upon establishing a connection with the internet, remotely logs the current time, IP, gateway, DNS server, etc....

This is essentially a "dial-home" version of laptop security, so it won't prevent my laptop from getting stolen per se, but it should certainly aid in the recovery. I have my MAC addresses written down and safely kept at home, but when push comes to shove you can't pick out a laptop from the internet with just these values, so I want to have something secretly (to the thief) publish my IP and such on a server of my choice.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Of course, that means you would have to disable thinkpad passwords, since you would want the thief to boot up and use the thing.

That's why I like (and use) the Tags with Passwords. When the thief realizes he/she can't get in, they are likely to go for the reward.
