yes, i just brought it to our techs to input the info.
I saw that they use the 1.69 version too.

At first they got the same message I got. Then after a series of power off and on, he was able to input it correctly.

This is getting very interesting... I'm going to try figuring what he did.

Sean I'm going to try your method again

G-Man-

May I get the Hardware maintnence utility as well?

We have a T23 that I repaired myself, though I am presently able to use the software updater utility, the #'s in the BIOS do not match the ones on the bottom of the unit.

I'm looking for the program too; I need 1.71 or higher. Sorry for bumping this and creating a new thread in X-series forum, but I'm pretty desperate to find it. Thanks!

Txiasaeia,

I only have 1.69. Let me know if you need it.

If you have the problem with MTM not supported and the MTM/Serial number is messed up in BIOS. With the newest version of SWI I have heard that you can add a key to your registry that will fix it so SWI will run.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\ThinkPadSoftwareInstaller\SysInfoOW
With String values "MachineType"="enter your MT here" and "ModelName"="enter your Model here"

still having the problem.

#36 Post by a31pguy » Sat May 07, 2005 7:51 pm

well I make the corrections to the BIOS and put in the machine type and serial number - but I am still having this issue with trying to install IBM Access Connections 3.71 - "machine type not supported" - any ideas?

BTW - the new levono software updater works - but the software it downloads still gives me issues.

Sean you are correct it does have to be in CAPS, i didn't know about the 1S when i did it so i just entered 00 at the beginning...

SeanM wrote:Technically, the "00" should be "1S", but for the purposes of this utility I don't think it matters.

You should also hit the caps lock and do everything in caps here, last I checked if the model number was in lower case in bios, the SWI wouldn't work.

Glad to hear you're all straightened out!

There's an option similiar to "Update BIOS" in the BIOS, select enable and try again.
IBM ThinkPad R51 1829-DRG
Intel P-M 1500 MHz

What is your machine type and model, and how is it displayed when you look in the bios?

I just tried this on my T42 (2378-FUU) and it worked. Although I would rather fix my serialnumber once & for all, this is a good workaround to get the software updater working.

You should put 2722 as the MachineType and GCU as the ModelName. The r40 most likely needs the latest version of the maintenance program, which I do not have. If you pm me your email I can send you the version I have.

As an update, I had to send my t42 in to fix another problem, and asked them to fix the bios while they had it. This really is the easiest (but longest) way to fix the problem.

I am also in need of this utility for my R51 (1830-AKU). The latest BIOS update program did have the option to update model type, but only the last three characters of it (after the hyphen). It would not let me change the first four digits.

My company swapped out the mobo last October and failed to put in the model or serial number on it before shipping it back to me, and now Software Update utility doesn't work.

Hi.
I would appreciate this utility as well. I got an R40 at work and the type number is wrong in the bios. My service provider says he will charge me for fixing this so if I can avoid that hassle I would be very happy.
My email is <omarhemm at gmail dot com>.

Cheers.

Hello everyone:
I just got a T23 with the 'Invalid machine type' problem. I'm also showing nothing on the Serial number and Model Number in the Bios. I would appreciate if someone would email me the IBM Maintenance Utility at luisy2k@excite.com.

Cheers from Puerto Rico.....

Hello,
I have the same problem, I get invalid machine type for the update, and serial and MT are blank. . I called support but no help. The support person said you can update this info on the desktops but not the laptops.
I would be grateful for a maintance program so I can take care of this.
jgfusco3@yahoo.com,

Thanks,

Jim

My machine got serviced by the local IBM rep, and they replaced the motherboard. Even though I've complained to them that they didn't set the model/serial number, they have no idea how to do it. sigh.

Any chance I could get a copy of that utility?

By reading all the mobo issues everyone having in that the machine type is not showing, is there any way the Hardware Maintenance Disk be posted somewhere. I know (I've heard) about the potential for it being used nefariously, but I believe it would make things easier and simpler since there are DIY'ers here. I, too, replaced both motherboards on the T22 I previously owned and the A30 I currently own. When I do the "Detect..." it gives me the wrong machine type. I'm not asking for the utility, but it would be easier to download.
