Unknown media status code - IBM 11a/b/g - v4.0.100.140

#1 Post by XCoalMiner » Thu Apr 21, 2005 10:52 pm

I'm getting an unusual message on my T41 when I do IPCONFIG /ALL:
  • Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.
Nothing appears to be wrong with the wireless card, I'm using it now. Device Manager says 'This device is working properly.' So I suspect driver upgrades are the culprit.

The unusual part is, I only get this when I have the wireless network card activated, ... but when both the hardwired network and the wireless cards are both enabled and have active connections, I get the expected responses from the IPCONFIG command, showing valid info for both the wired and wireless, (and when only the hardwired card is enabled, I get the appropriate response).

I recently upgraded many of the drivers on my T41, using IBM's ThinkPad Software Installer. I tried rolling back the BIOS, that didn't correct it. Tried rolling back the wireless driver, but the prior version is incompatible with the Access Connections version (3.71) I have, ... would it make sense to rollback both the driver and the Access Connections?

Any insights or help appreciated!

I’m wondering if anyone with same setup I have, Access Connections v 3.71, an IBM 11a/b/g Wireless Card with driver version 4.0.100.140, in a T41 (2379DJU, BIOS ver 3.15) is getting the same results?

This has not gotten more mysterious.

When the wireless card is initially disconnected, for a very short period of time I get a normal return from the command, ("Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected"), then, with the wireless card either disconnected or connected, I get the above error.

So I suspect this is not a hardware problem, and maybe not a driver issue. But I'm stumped for now. Has anyone used any troubleshooting tools, ... such as PC Doctor that comes with IBM's operating system loads, to look into these kind of things?

I thought I’d report back on how I fixed this annoying problem.

Evidently the issue was the driver for the wired Ethernet adapter (Intel PRO/1000 MT) and not the wireless card driver, although I’m not able to recreate the problem now.

It took a series of uninstalls and rolling back of several drivers for both network adapters (The sequence was: uninstall Access Connections, rollback driver on either wired or wireless card, reinstall older driver, see if problem persists, re-install Access Connections to see if it was the problem, repeat.). Now that I have all drivers up to the latest revs. (per the ThinkPad Software Installed, … which for the record made this process very clear and easy), the problem does not reappear, and these were the same versions I had been using.

So, I suspect uninstalling Access Connections, and then reinstalling the driver for the wired network adapter played into this fix, but I’m not entirely certain. It was unnerving not being able to see the output of IPCONFIG.

I observed the same problem on a T42p with Windows XP Pro SP2. Namely:
------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite this error, network access was fine. Additionally, I observed that the error occurred while using a 11a/b/g Wireless CardBus Adapter. When an Ethernet cable was attached to the Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile connection, the error did not occur.

After pulling my hair out for several hours, I discovered that the error seemed to be related to an Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile driver that was recommended on the Windows Update Web site under 'Hardware Updates'. I had just installed that driver, which was 'published' on Aug. 12, 2005, & had a release date of June 29, 2005.

I reverted to the latest driver from IBM (retrieved via 'Access IBM'), & it resolved the problem. The driver from the IBM Web site is dated Oct. 26, 2004 with a version number of 7.2.17.101. On the site it is listed as Build 94590 with a Release Date of April 22, 2005.

Life is good again! :)

Here's the solution that I just used to solve the same problem on my T40.

Taken from :
http://www.techwarelabs.com/community/v ... hp?p=62842

--------------------------

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\robert>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: The operation completed successfully.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.

Had the same problem. Try starting these services:

Remote procedure call (RPC)
Routing and Remote Access

Started them and voila -- ipconfig works.

netsh int ip show ipaddress had a more informative error message.

Ooops .... I spoke too soon.

Although "ipconfig /all" worked for me after starting "Routing and Remote Access", as soon as I rebooted it wasn't working again.

So, I used SoftwareJock's solution of deleting the new driver that came in August from Windows Update and reinstalling the driver from IBM.

The problem is now solved.
