Memory voltage for W520

#1 Post by stickx » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:00 pm

I want to upgrade the memory on my new W520 but I can't find out what voltage RAM to get - I have tried searching the forum and the Lenovo specs. I find both 1.35v and 1.5v DDR3 1333 memory. For example:

or

Anyone know which to get? Any reason to go for the 1.35v?

MY W520 from work shipped with 1.5v RAM. If I was going to get additional, I'd get the same 1.5v RAM. The RAM upgrade I purchased for my T420 in my sig was also 1.5v RAM. This topic might have some additional details for you: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=96352 regarding RAM speed, etc.

That said, Crucial.com's memory finder DOES match my T420 with 1.5v and 1.35v RAM - so you may be OK with either, but I'd stick with the same as it came with from the factory (and check yours to be sure). Good luck.

I just purchased and installed four of these 8GB 1.5V G-Skill modules into my W520 for a total of 32GB. Is works perfectly.

Lower voltage = lower power use...no idea what this means in battery time though...

the W520's memory bus runs at 1.5V so even if you buy 1.35V they'll end up running at 1.5V.   both voltages are compatible with the W520.   1.35V modules won't save any power in your current system but will save power in future systems.

welcome to the forum, btw!

Thanks for the help everyone. I think the G-Skill 1.5v is the way I will go. I also plan on spending a lot of time reading on the forum.

Good choice. G-Skill has a good reputation for reliable RAM modules.
