T40 fan differences

#1 Post by Unknown_K » Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:34 pm

My T40 had a fan error (the fan works on the second try, only fails once in a blue moon) last week so I ordered a used fan off of ebay. When I went to install the fan I noticed the older heatsink had a section that covered the GPU (ATI 9000 in my case) and the replacement doesn't have that so I didn't bother replacing the old fan. Is there much difference between the different types, what GPU needs the extra cooling anyway?

Yep.

You need a "long" fan for that ATi 9000.

The original one was M9, which was later replaced by M10 that was used on T41/p and T42/p with higher-end graphics.

13R2657 is the FRU for M10, and I'm sure an eBay search will yield wonders.

Happy hunting.
