Tool to automatically update drivers?

#1 Post by wrybread » Mon Jul 09, 2012 11:29 pm

I'm installing on a new-to-me T60, going through all the drivers, and I vaguely remember someone saying there's a utility that does this automatically?

Googling around I find this commercial product:

http://download.cnet.com/ThinkPad-Drive ... 31916.html

But I'm hoping there's something free, or made by Lenovo? I have the ThinkVantage Update utility installed, but it's not showing any of the drivers I need to install.

I have the network drivers installed so have internet.

It's called System Update and is available via Lenovo's website.

Strange, System Update isn't able to find any drivers that I need. In the "optional updates" tab it suggests a lot of Lenovo utilities, but the only driver is for the Wifi card, which is about the only driver that's actually installed.

That commercial utility correctly finds every driver I need, but its $30.

I don't imagine anyone has some trick to make System Update work when it isn't?

There are 2 versions, one only for W7, and one for all previous Windows versions.

Does the info in the BIOS after System serial number match the TYPE label on the laptop bottom?

Keep in mind that the T60 is an old system, so if you installed a windows version that's newer then the last time the T60 drivers were updated, then you probably have newer versions installed by windows. Check device manager to see if there are any devices with "?" or "!" icons on them. If there are, you can install their drivers manually.

The utility correctly identifies my model number, and I'm using the correct version (the one for XP, which is what I installed).

And there are no drivers installed for the devices at all.

After getting what you need/want from TVSU, run Windows Updates and it will give you the missing drivers.
Be sure to check the available Optional Updates.

Did it this way just last week with a T60 and was left with no yellow question marks.

Alas, Windows Update didn't work either.

So strange that the 3rd party app seems to be working perfectly, prompting me to install drivers that haven't been installed yet, and to upgrade drivers that have. I assume it gets its data from the same place as System Update, but System Update is failing completely.
