Driver for thinkpad w500 on windows 8

#1 Post by QWERTY Andreas » Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:34 am

Hi everybody
I just installed Windows 8 to my thinkpad w500, and im very satisfied, but there is one problem.

First i cant use system update. When i try to run it comes up with a error report where it says it is unable to gather user information. But SU doesnt support Windows 8, so im fine.

However without system update i cant get the probre graphocs driver for the FireGL V5700 Graphics Card. Does anybody know where i can get that?

You should be able to use the Windows 7 device driver for your graphics card but as I don't have your specific model of TP I can't guarantee that it will work for sure - what's the full model type number for your TP? :)

What happens exactly when your trying to install the W7 driver and how are you doing the install i.e. executable install or via a manual driver update in Device Manager?

When i try to update in device manager it installs a driver for an "Engineering" sample hd 3650, and the driver is a Little bugged and doesnt have very good performance.

When i download and install a driver from lenovos website, it installs just fine but nothing happens. It doesnt replace the driver or add anything. It just installs while the old (and not so good) one stays.

Cheers

Did you carefully follow the directions in the README on installing drivers?

thank you for the reply, but that is for the Intel and not the AMD. The Intel driver is working just fine :-)

Install process is the same for either one. But, you should be using the switchable graphics driver if you want both to work.

I got this working. It's remarkably simple.
1. Install the power manager driver and app FIRST.
2. Reboot.
3. Use the Lenovo Windows 7 driver.
4. Allow the Lenovo driver package to unpack to C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO as usual, BUT DO NOT RUN THE ATI Setup.exe.
5. Navigate to the location of the ATI package, which is in the usual C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO folder.
6. Right click on the ATI "Setup.exe", -->properties-->compatibility-->select Windows XP/SP3.
7. Run the ATI Setup.exe.
8. Reboot.

From this point, the install proceeds normally. After reboot, and a little time to load, a right-click on the battery icon provides the "switchable graphics" option. Switching does work. When the 5700GL is selected, the ATI control applet will be availailable in the usual place.

I gave up before deciding to:
1. Give XP/SP3 a try.
2. Understand that selecting XP/SP3 compatibility at the level of the Lenovo package does not carry over to the ATI Setup.exe. It has to be selected there.

The result is very sweet.
W500x3 with T9900, , T400 highnit 1280x800 with P9600, X61sx3, X61Tx3.
