Help needed with chosing new HDD for X30

Hi there.

I've had my X30 for just over a year now and love it. However I am running out of disk space, I have already removed the IBM restore partition. It's a 30GB drive.

What choice do I have for HDDs? I don't realy want another IBM 4700RPM drive as it's soooo slow. Has anyone sucessfully installed another faster and higher capcity drive? What impact do the faster drives have on the battery life.

Actually, I just upgraded my drive (internal) to a IBM 60GB, 5400rpm, 8MB (I think!). Basically, faster and more space (duh!)...

But this series of drives has this click click sound ... though everything runs fine.

I put a Hitachi 7200rpm 60gig drive in my X31 and it is great. I don't run off the the battery a whole lot so I haven't noticed any difference. It is big, fast and hot. -Mike

on monday, i installed a 40gb hitachi E7K60 into my s30. it's easily 50% faster than before. cold boot times dropped :15~:20 on average. and, battery life hasn't been noticeably affected.

if you're going to make the upgrade, get something at 7200rpm. both hitachi 7K60 drives that i have are extremely quiet.

In the link you provided, it states that the 48GB and 60GB HDDs are not supported as an upgrade to the primary system HDD on the ThinkPad X series. Does this mean it won't work because of a technical reason or just not 'supported' by IBM.

I'll look at the Hitachi drives. From what's been said they look like a good option.

That page is slightly out of date... the reason that the 48GB and 60GB HDDs were "not supported" on those machines is a matter of height.
When first released, those drives were 12.5mm in height - the 48GB has since been withdrawn and there are now 9.5mm versions of the 60GB drives.

Your system (as long as it has the latest BIOS) can quite easily accommodate any of the presently avail 2.5" inch HDDs - up to and including 80GB.

OK, I am about to go ahead a order a Hitachi 7200rpm 60GB drive. But before I do I just want to be sure the it will be a simple straight swap and nothing else is necessary for it to work (apart from maybe a bios update?).

Also, so far the best price I have seen for the hdd is $245. Does anyone know anywhere that can better this price?

And finaly, what is the best way of transferring the OS and data from my old drive to the new drive? I don't have the recovery CDs and don't really want to start from scratch with reinstalling everything if I can help it.
