Can I get Win7 on new Tpad after Win8 is released?

#1 Post by AMATX » Thu Jul 19, 2012 3:45 pm

Just saw a blurb on TV that MSFT is scheduled to release Win8 on Oct. 26, 2012.

Anyone know how long(if at all) Lenovo will overlap with Win7 such that I could buy a -new- Thinkpad with Win7 installed, vs. Win8 ?

Don't wanna be bleeding edge here on this one, and Win7 does exactly what I need it to do at present.

Based on what the laptop industry (not just IBM/Lenovo) has done historically, there will be pracitally no significant overlap in the main, one-off RETAIL sales channels.

There might be some sort of down-licence arrangement, such as there for some system offers, between Win 7 and XP, but that is primarily in the hands of Microsoft, as they set the licence conditions/offers.

Cheers,

To some degree it'll probably depend on customer reaction to Windows 8. You could buy a ThinkPad with XP for a couple years after Vista was released, but when Windows 7 was released, Vista pretty much disappeared to everyone's delight.

Well, most people's delight. I am a huge fan of Vista.

No way in hell is the corporate or gov't world going to jump on a w8 bandwagon right away. There are still many large corporations using XP. Sure there will be some bleeding edge adopters, but 7 will be around for a while.

This is NOT a place for an OS war. Please stick to the specific topic at hand, which is what is likely to be available in the ThinkPad retail bundle from the time that Windows 8 is released. :BAAAD!:

I believe Microsoft is building a "step back" option into Win8 that will allow users to go back to a version as old as Vista.

They offered the same deal with Win7 that allowed you to step back as far as XP. This time, however, Vista is as far back as you can go (for free).
