X60 restore discs and pre desktop area

#1 Post by snow Crash » Sat Jul 21, 2012 8:46 am

Hello, I've had an x60 1707 for a while now. It came without restore discs or a hard drive. I've installed a liscenced copy of 7 home basic on it and everything is fine. I want to use the fingerprint scanner to lock the computer, but the bios setting suggest that it needs an application in the pre-desktop area to work. Is it possible to buy a restore disc set that supports 7? Would this also work on an ssd? I've seen restore discs for sale that have XP as the included OS, which is ok as the laptop has it's original XP sticker in addition to the 7 one as well. Ideally i'd like to use 7 on the laptop with the pre desktop area on an ssd. Is this possible if i first format the drive under windows 7 or will the restore disc format and partition it? Will that work with the 4k sector size?

You do not need the pre-desktop area for the fingerprint scanner to work in Windows. As long as the FPR is enabled in BIOS, and you have installed drivers in Windows, the FPR will work at the logon screen, i.e. you can use your fingerprint to unlock the computer when you boot windows, when you wake up the computer from sleep, etc.

Sorry, i realise that i've not made myself clear, possible because i'm not sure what i'm asking myself. Ooops, basically i assumed that you could lock it at bios level with the fingerprint scanner, but it needs the pre-desktop installed.
