Hi all
I have a 42W7649 T61 mobo with the (dreaded) nvidia 140 gpu I'd like to install on my 15" UXGA T60p.
I'm stalling a bit looking for the right heatsink.
My understanding is that the T61 heatsink I need for this machine is the
42W2820 Thermal device and fan (discrete)
But I also believe the
42W2821 Thermal device and fan (integrate)
will also work?
Right about now a seller is proposing the 42X4685 / 42W2028 which is from the 15.4" T61, will this work too? I've been offered a better deal on this.
Finally, I understand the T61 heatsink is better than the T60p one, but for the purpose of testing the mobo would the original T60p one do, temporarily?
I have the cpu 42W2762 backplate already.
Thanks so much!

Re: frankenpad T61 mobo on T60p 15" - heatsink question
You can fit any of the discrete fans from T61/T61p except the 14.1 widescreen. Do NOT use the integrated heatsink, although it does appear to have a place to apply the thermal paste, this isn't a heat platform and won't conduct the heat. You can indeed use your T60p heatsink, just make sure your GPU platform is adjusted to ist flush on the nVidia chip and use some arctic silver #5 paste.
The best heatsink to use is the t61p. I have a few of them left pulled from mint conditon corporate laptops, but you'd probably be better buying them local due to international shipping issues, but if you can't find one, let me know and I'll be glad to help.
ps. The nVidia GPU isn't as prone to failure as is commonly believed. Some do fail, but millions are still in service over 5 years since introduced. With proper cooling and care it could last you many years, but the worst part of the problem is that it's a trivial matter to get a failed one to boot temporarily, and there seems to be no shortage of people willing to sell, and resell the same failed ones over and over to unsuspecting buyers. If you sourced your board from a laptop that has never failed, then you'll probably be fine. Good luck

Re: frankenpad T61 mobo on T60p 15" - heatsink question
Hi TuuS - thanks so much for your kind answer!
When you say the best is the one from the T61p, do you mean the 14 inch or the 15.4"? Sorry I can't remember my models correctly (which exactly were the T61p).
Looking forward for trying my mobo out.

Either will work, the only difference is the guides for the antenna routing. My choice would be the 15.4" T61p fan. I have a number of them and have provided them for many frankNpad builds.kamaleon wrote:Hi TuuS - thanks so much for your kind answer!

Re: frankenpad T61 mobo on T60p 15" - heatsink question
great thread, I am also confused in heatsinks that would fit frankenpad.
Is my understanding right that for T61 motherboard 42W7872 both 42W2821 and 42W2820 will fit? Or I have to choose particular one of them? It looks like 42W2821 is hard to find anyway.
I plan to use T60 15" 4:3 FRU 41W6360 as chassis, here is the picture: http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/1184/41w6360.jpg
Will the original heatsink that is visible on the above picture be OK for this frankenpad? I would appreciate if you could give some FRU numbers for other heatsinks that would be appropriate for 42W7872/41W6360 combination frankenpad.
thank you,
geos
