Can't buy T42 keyboard from IBM?

#1 Post by dash7540 » Sat Apr 23, 2005 2:04 pm

First off, I want to buy a new keyboard (the Thai a.k.a. NMB version that is.) But when I go to the parts order site, it keeps saying it can't find the right part number although I am absolutely sure it's correct.

Here is the keyboard parts site:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46503

The one I want to order is 08K5044.

I just copy and paste that number onto the parts order page: http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

But it keeps give me the same message no matter what. I've been trying this over a week, but to no avail.

I even tried to order the Chinese-made keyboard, but that doesn't work either.

I also realize if they didn't have it in stock, it would say so on the checkout page.

So has IBM stopped making keyboards for T42s or something? Or am I just looking at the wrong site?

If I can't get one from IBM, does anyone know where else I can get one for cheap?

Thanks very much any help.

Yeah, just give them a call. I know at least 50 ThinkPad part numbers that site doesn't recognize.

I don't know what is IBM's price, but you can also try this, this or this online retailer.

But still, the easiest way (and probably cheapest) is to call IBM.

Thanks for your fast responses.

I guess I'll just give them a call... what is their number by the way? Should I just use 1-800-IBM-SERV or is it something else?

I remember a few months ago when I was browsing around, many of the parts including the keyboard were recognized, but now they aren't, unfortunately.

Also, how much do you think IBM would charge me? Those other sites charge $100 for a keyboard (!) which is just outrageous.

That phone number should be fine. Or try this one: 1-888-SHOP-IBM

I guess the price will be around $80. You can also try to call them, and tell that you are not happy with your current keyboard (tell them that it makes more noises than your previous TP's keyboard, or some of the key response slower bla-bla-bla) and want to replace it with the Thai one. Look back on this forum. Some people had no problem replacing their keyboard for free.

Well my Chinese-made keyboard right now actually squeaks a little at times and it flexes quite a bit on the right side, especially near the arrow keys. It's kind of annoying since it happened after I removed and reinstalled the keyboard; when I first got my T42, the keyboard was perfect. Plus, would IBM give me a new (as opposed to refurbished) keyboard?

Well, then just tell them the truth.

Of course they will give you a new one.
