WiDi (Wireless Display) is possible on the X220!

Following the information from the following post, I was able to get WiDi working with my X220. Basically you have to install the WiFi driver for the X230 (instead of the one for the X220).

Had to buy a WiDi adapter for my TV. I bought a Netgear Push2TV HD (PTV2000) adapter from Newegg for about $100. It connects to my TV via a HDMI cable (included). Even though my TV has built in wireless, I still had to get this wireless adapter.

All in all, it's pretty cool. I can view internet content on my TV, such as youtube videos or webpages. Amazingly, it sends a WiFi signal to the TV while simultaneously using WiFi to connect to the internet. The video and sound quality are both very good.

I've been WiDi running with a PTV2000 for a while now, with just X220 stuff on my X220.

All I know is that I first saw the "Intel Wireless Display" software available running System Update about a month ago on my X220. I installed the WiDi feature, but it failed. After I installed the Intel WLAN software version for the X230 I had success.

Interestingly, the Intel WLAN software readme for the X230 says it has the "New Intel My WiFi Dashboard Application for WiFi Direct support". No such mention of this in the Intel WLAN software readme for the X220.

The prerequisites for the Intel Wireless Display software for the X220 state you should have installed:
"Intel My WiFi Technology/Intel My WiFi Dashboard, enabled". Not sure why it's missing in action in the X220 driver matrix.

Just to revisit this again...

I removed the existing Intel Wireless Software and WiDi software, and installed the latest version 14.x of the Intel Wireless Software (with WiDi components) and the latest version of the WiDi software from the driver matrix for the X220. WiDi would run, but it would not connect to my Netgear PV2000 adapter.

Looked at the Readme for the WiDi software and saw the following:

NOTES

- Prerequisite for installation:
The following hardware and software should be installed in your computer
before installation of this software.

For Windows 8,
- Intel Wireless LAN adapter card and driver, version 15.5 or higher for:
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N + WiMAX 6250.
- Intel HD Graphics Family 3000/4000 driver version 9.17.10.2843 or later.
- Intel 5,6,7 Series Chipset.
- Intel Management Engineering Component, version 7.0.0.1144 or higher.

For Windows 7,
- Microsoft .NET 4.0 framework is required for Installation of WiDi.
- Intel Wireless LAN adapter card and driver, version 15.2 or higher for:

Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N + WiMAX 6250.

- Intel Management Engineering Component, version 7.0.0.1144 or higher.

As shown above: whether running Windows 8 or Windows 7, you need version 15.x of the Intel Wireless Software for WiDi to work. On the driver matrix for the X220 there is a version 15.x, but only for Windows 8. On the driver matrix page for the X230 there is a version 15.x for Windows 7 and a different 15.x for Windows 8. Looking at the Readme for 15.x for Windows 7 on the X230 page, it says that it supports the X220 (among other models).

I uninstalled the Intel WiDi software and the Intel Wireless software. Rebooted, then installed the Intel Wireless 15.x software for Windows 7 (from the X230 driver matrix page) [NOTE: When installing the Intel Wireless Software, when given the option for Typical or Custom install, choose Custom and then choose to add the WiDi component. Otherwise the necessary WiDi software is not installed]. Finally I rebooted then installed the WiDi software from the X220 driver matrix page. WiDi works fine with this software combo.

Just a heads up. I followed the information in the following post to get my WiFi to reconnect faster. It did work, but what it did is break Intel Wireless Display. Fortunately I renamed the files rather than deleting them, so restoring the file to their original name fixed the issue.

Not sure what package includes these files - I guess they're part of Windows 7 itself. None of the re-installs of Intel HD graphics, Intel ProSet Wireless, or Intel WiDi software packages re-installed these files.

EDIT: According to Intel, the newer versions of the Intel ProSet Wireless software supports WiDi by default. This means the newer versions of the Intel ProSet Wireless Software from Lenovo for the X220 does now support WiDi. Be careful, some versions of Lenovo's software on the X220's download page have other software requirements that are not supported by the X220. Cross-check the readme files to be sure.

Intel® My WiFi Technology is now installed by default. Because of this, Intel® Wireless Display users no longer need to install a special version of Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility.

But I have one question, regarding the tv adapter: do you think it will work connected to an a/v receiver that is then connected to the tv? I have this setup to allow for multiple HDMI inputs and Dolby surround.

Just to achieve closure: i got a Belkin Screencast, plugged it into my TV and the X220 loves it
Pretty fast connection and no hesitations, even watching HD video. 4,6GB flicks stream effortlessly, sound comes out just as good. Thought I might share
