Google To Include Your Personal Email In Search Results

This "news" was just emailed to me:
Google To Include Your Personal Email In Search Results

Breaking News | August 8, 2012 | 2 Comments

(Michael Liedtke) Google is creating an information bridge between its influential Internet search engine and its widely used Gmail service in its latest attempt to deliver more personal responses more quickly. The experimental feature unveiled Wednesday will enable Google’s search engine to mine the correspondence stored within a user’s Gmail account for any data tied to a search request.

For example, a query containing the word “Amazon” would pull emails with shipping information sent by the online retailer. Such Gmail results will typically be shown to the right of the main results, though in some instances, the top of the search page will highlight an answer extracted directly from an email.

For example, the request “my flight” will show specific airline information imported from Gmail. Something similar could eventually happen when searching for a restaurant reservation or tickets to a concert. Although Google has a commanding lead in Internet search, it remains worried about the threat posed by social networking services such as Facebook Inc. As social networks have made it easier to share information online, the Web is starting to revolve more around people than the keywords and links that Google’s search engine.
if this is real it would validate my thoughts years ago when gmail was started..
"where's the payoff for google?"

Does it apply for those who have email on their own domain but use Google services as well ?

I have never used any Google personalised service.

Google has allocated ca. 10GB of Gmail storage for me.
In there are a few hundred emails, such as notifications from mycarstats.com, the daily blurbs from Newegg and some unimportant correspondence with people that I don't want to give a proper email address to.
They are welcome to use that.
All my other email addresses are on my own servers. Google doesn't have its dirty mitts there, I can guarantee you that!
I've never used the likes of Hotmail or AOL.
Maybe I should give up my Gmail account altogether...

In other words, every Google search is linked to a search in the Gmail mailbox which you are logged in to on the particular PC?

Sounds like something for people who have no idea about the difference between the WWW at large and their personal emails and think of everything as "online".
I would turn that feature off the instant it appears. If I can't turn it off... well... I'll be quite upset.

If anyone's interested, the actual AP article is here.

Me? I don't use GMail and I don't use Google. So it doesn't really affect me either way...

interesting stat.. 425 million gmail accounts..

i wonder how many of those were used by spammers..
i know many hundreds of gmail accounts (and yahoo and hotmail) were used to try to sign up for forum accounts and then span the forum..
which were caught and deleted..

still and all it should be well known by now that emails are less secure than a first class letter.. much less..
