Rumors: Alviso Chipset Delayed

If this unfortunate news is true, we won't see a T50 generation notebook until next year.

The reason for the delay may not necessarily be a problem with the Alviso chipset. Alviso uses DDR2 memory and SATA hard drives, neither of which may be available in quantity for notebook use by Q4 of this year.

Trusty old Intel....you can always count on them to deliver! heh yeah right, but at least I can enjoy having the 'newest' model for a while longer now!

It was shown that the DDR2 didn't help speeds much at all. The PCI-X graphics also were shown to be slightly slower than their AGP8X counterparts. Perhaps it was a driver issue but nevertheless, the results were there on shipping motherboards. I don't really see a reason to wait for it.

A few notes:

PCI-X is not PCI Express (PCIe or PCI-E). PCI-X is an extension of the older PCI standard. PCIe is a serial, point-to-point bus.

DDR2 isn't faster than DDR-400 at the moment, but it runs at a lower voltage and should use less power than DDR. This could help extend notebook battery life.

I am fairly sure that the new chipset will improve the Centrino platform considerably.
