WTB: R40 RAM, Rescue & Recovery discs, Misc.

#1 Post by Thedaddy » Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:20 pm

Not sure if anyone still has anything for one of these out there, but here goes anyway...
This machine came with Windows XP, has the 1400 Screen, ATI graphics.
1) Looking for RAM, it came with 1G. I have some R51 and T40 sticks of 512--but I'm not sure if those are usuable in the R40.
2) It has a 1.4 processor-- and wondered what the max upgrade would be and if so, I'm interested.
3) Are there any special HDD requirements? I know the T43 is a bit picky about what HDD it uses. I have a 40G out of a T40 that I could use.
4) Thermal paste for the bit between the processor and fan, is that available generally, or is it special order through the internet?
5) I also need some R&R Discs for this one, I have a T42 that I could make some discs from, but not sure they will work in an R40.
Finally, I seem to recall reading here that the R40 required a special AC adapter, I've been using my T42 adapter in it for testing, but I don't want to damage the internals if someone has the correct AC adapter.
Let me know thanks!

Bob,

Never got to respond to your PM so I'll do it here:

1) RAM from T40/R51 will be fine.

2) Pentium M 1.7 Banias is the fastest that these machines will take, not much of an upgrade over your current one.

3) No problem, the drive from the T40 will do great.

4) Arctic Silver in your local Radio Shack or from New Egg

5) T42 restore disks will work just fine, they're actually newer than the original R40 ones...

6) No special AC adapter requirement, the same adapter from T4x/R5x or any pre-Lenovo ThinkPad will work just fine. 72W, that is.

Thanks George,

I wasn't sure you would have anything that old--R40 is a bit of an oldie I guess.
That said, it sounds like I don't need anything after all. Itseems to run a touch on the hot side-- so I was going to remove that fan anyway, and while I was there I might as well upgrade the processor--so if you have that Pentium M 1.7 Banias let me know.
I was very happy with all the items you sent me and recommend you to everyone here...I'll keep tinkering with my old stock, hopefully I can help you move some other things...

I have an original AC adapter (in a nice zippered storage container) if you still need this. I have an R40 I acquired many years ago and just replaced the HD, but I do not have the recovery disks with Windows XP pro so that I can get my machine up and running again. I saw a post that T42 recovery disks would work - do those contain Windows XP?
Thanks!
