Thinkpad 500 locked up at Windows Start Screen

I have tried a boot disk, reset by removing battery and nothing works. I really don't want to re-install Windows 7 (32bit) and lose all my docs, picturs et all. Any help would be appreciated.

Does attempting to access the Safe Boot Mode, via the F8 Key, fail?

Have you tried booting off of a Linux CD/DVD/USB Stick to confirm it's not a hardware related issue with the HDD?
