Heat-Cooler Mods
Pics: http://s873.photobucket.com/user/epilam ... k.jpg.html
I took the IHS [heat spreader] off the ATI chip.
Then I placed a straight edge across the ATI and the north and south bridge.
Using a .040 copper plate, I could cover all three chips with copper shims.
.oo5 for the north bridge, .016 for the ATI, and .017 for the south bridge. [last pic]
I ran the T43p with the ATI shimmed only to measure the temps running memtest 86+.
The cpu/ATI = 36c
Northbridge = 62c
Southbridge= 52c
Measured with a IR gun.

Used the iso to "no 2010". It worked.

Heatsink bridge done. Tried to take pics but they were meaningless.
Cooled the NB and SB 38c
cpu and gpu still 36c

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
While I understand the whole IR gun business, most of us measure temperatures in a different manner...
Could you possibly install TPFC and share the temp readings from there?

Ok I swapped fans. Put a M10 in. Ran out of AS5 switched to Thermalright white stuff.
Then I ran OCCT burner for 5 minutes. Here are the TPFC results and no slow downs or screen gliiches or anything.
Manual fan "7" palm rest screwed down. Some of the numbers are lower- prolly because all the covers were
screwed on. Dothan 780 running. 2GB memory 320GB SATA HD WIN XP sp3 original

OK, when you get a chance could you please post the idle temps on a freshly booted machine?
You'll have driver issues with W98, but good luck regardless.

So what do you think? I took your advice and bought and installed a M10 fan.

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
There is a large difference to me.
The direct heat readings on the north and south bridge go from the 60s to the high 30s, no matter what the M/B sensors
indicate. I trust direct IR readings more. The disadvantage is the heat from the Nb and Sb is applied to the GPU and CPU on the fan heatsink.
Overall it is a lousy solution though. On a good desktop expect to find a 12c delta between the OAT and the CPU at idle.
My machine is running a delta of 22c.

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
I really don't believe that you can compare a desktop and a laptop in a meaningful way when it comes to stuff like this.malch wrote: On a good desktop expect to find a 12c delta between the OAT and the CPU at idle.
My machine is running a delta of 22c.
That being said, going back to the original cooling system and running NHC to undervolt the CPU might get you some relief. You'd also be able to play with GPU settings - which are the most important heat generator - along the way.
Good luck.

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm staying with the new heatsink, Took me 20 hours of fiddly exacting work to make it.
Nice fan, nice cpu, fast little thing. cool running
My aim is to have a laptop that does Win98 [dos] to Win7.

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
I hear you.
Your second set of temps is a bit on the high-end in my book.
Whatever you do, just keep the darn thing on 24/7/365...and enjoy it thoroughly.

Re: Heat-Cooler Mods
Aye, but undervolting the CPU would on the other hand make up for some of the additional heat which you're offloading to the heatsink, perhaps making it all more efficient and even more worth the efforts you made (which is the kind of mix of creativivity, stubbornness and hand craft which impress memalch wrote:Thanks for your thoughts. I'm running the CPU of my T40 undervolted by some 20%, all totally stable (and producing significantly less heat for the same clock cycles).
