Just purchased the T42 2379R1U Model
After countless months of researching which laptop to buy. I finally purchased the T42 2379R1U Model.
I paid $1,195.67 including tax. I have a friend at IBM, and he gave me his information for the EPP.
It was either an IBM thinkpad or a Dell. I keep hearing mixed reviews about each one, and everyone has their opinions. What matters to me is that it's a good built laptop. I've been working with Dell laptops at work, and I'm not going to lie, for the value they are good, but the built isn't that great.
I just hope that I made a good decision, and I'm glad I found this forum, but I'm sure I'll be happy with it. I'm not used to spending alot of money on these types of units.
Can anyone tell me what kind of warranties these come with? I feel like a retard for asking, but I couldn't really find a specific warranty in terms of service and repairs. Can someone help me with this?

when you bought it, was it under 1 or 3 year warranty?
Essentially, if the machine has a hardware problem, you can send it in to EasyServe or an IBM Authorized Repair Centre for the repair. If it's intentional or accidental damage, or if its cosmetic damage, then, no, its not covered. Neither are software problems covered...learned that the hard way.

I couldn't find if it was a 1 year or 3 year warranty... It just had a very vague warranty description that's what I needed to know...

3 year from date of invoice.
3 year from date of invoice.
That's not necessarily correct. IBM supports Windows to the extent that they provide all drivers and updates to keep your machine running.pphilipko wrote:Neither are software problems covered...learned that the hard way.
The IBM help desk will assist you in re-loading XP if necessary and restoring the machine to the condition it was in when it left the factory.

Thanks, I see it now...
Can anyone tell me if they had any regrets? Are you all happy with your purchases?DoS wrote:http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

Not in the way you mentioned. If you send in a thinkpad for a hardware repair when it has instead a software problem...they charge you. I lost $150 from that mistake.JHEM wrote:That's not necessarily correct. Did this occur with IBM CA? Sounds more like some local rep hosed you.pphilipko wrote:Not in the way you mentioned. If you send in a thinkpad for a hardware repair when it has instead a software problem...they charge you. I lost $150 from that mistake.
Was it a Windows related problem? In such a case it's normal to just reinstall the OS and return the unit without charge. Even if it were a problem with a program you installed, the normal course of events here in the US would have resulted in your receiving the unit back with the HD wiped and the OS reinstalled, again for no charge.
What was the offending software? What exactly did they charge you for?
Would really like to read all the facts of the case.

James

I was having trouble with the wireless on my thinkpad, and called IBM for troubleshooting. He said that it was probably a hardware problem and told me to carry it in to an IBM authorized repair centre. I sent it in, and a week later, they said that nothing was wrong. When I got it back, it worked! I asked them what the problem was, they said it was software-related, and didn't give any specifics. The repair guy said that he took two and a half hours finding out the "problem", and so, at $60 an hour, I was charged 150 dollars. I tried calling IBM to complain, but the rep stated that it was IBM standard procedure.
and yes, this was with IBM CA.
