2378FVU vs 266872U

#1 Post by phpguru » Sun Apr 24, 2005 7:02 pm

Here's my dillemma:

2378FVU w/ 512 Stick & Port Replicator or Thinkpad Case is $1587 (w/tax)

266872U w/ edu discount & Port Replicator or Thinkpad Case is $2100 (w/tax)

I'm debating over which one to buy. I don't need all the things the 266872U offer like DVDR, bluetooth, 80gb, etc. but its nice to have. Although when I look at the 2378FVU, for only 500 more, I get all that stuff. Is it worth it? It seems to me that the 266872U is a MUCH hotter deal than the 2378FVU but I can't decide where my money should go.

Here are my uses: DVD playback, office apps, internet, coding, maple, matlab, presentations. It will be a backup computer to my desktop.

thanks,

if this is to complement your desktop, I suggest that you get the FVU. Based on the tasks you're going to be using the computer with, the extra $500 isn't worth it. You can always burn your DVD's on the desktop.

I totally forgot about the warranty. The 2378FVU will need to add some more for the warranty. Which warranty am I eligable for in California?

I’m not sure what you mean. You’re eligible for all the warranties, and you can buy the accidental damage protection, if you wish. If I’m not mistaken, the FVU has three year warrantee.

I don't think that I am eligable for the onsite warranty in California. At least that's what it states on the configuration site when I click "Help me decide"

so, are you planning to buy the FVU? I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure about IBM's policy. As far as I know, accidental protection is only available in the US.

I'm leaning towards the FVU but with the warranty, it comes out to 1800. For $300, a T43. Decisions, decisions.

I would still buy the FVU. After all, it's less noisy, hot, and has less power consumption. Best of luck in the future! :)

Thanks for the quick replies pphilipko!

I also wanted to know if I could use the MC/Visa/AMEX sites if I have the normal card. Or do I specifically need the business version?
