Power Problem on T60

#1 Post by nurwachid » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:55 am

Dear All,
I have just got used T60. I got some problem with this machine.

1. if the battery attached, the machine won't power on, even with AC adapter plugged in. Once or twice it will power on, but mostly not. The battery i think is still OK, at time it charged (i was lucky), powering the machine with battery last for more than 1 hour before it drains. If the the AC adapter plugged in without battery attached, the machine powered on. What is wrong with my machine?
2. All the indicator led on the panel not light. What might be the cause?

Battery is damaged, most likely. Replace it.

If the status lights don't turn on, it's either the inverter or the fuze at the motherboard.
Main: i5 3550, 16GB, Z68 Pro3 M, 64GB SLC, 320GB HD, GTX 650Ti, 21.5 FHD LED
T420: i5-2520m, 8GB, SSD: 64GB SLC (boot) | 128GB MLC (storage), HD3000, HD (1366x768), 6 Cell, BT, WebCam
X220: i5-2520m, 4GB, SSD: 64GB SLC (boot) | 128GB MLC (storage), HD3000, HD (1366x768), 6 Cell, BT, WebCam, FP

Thanks for the response.

I am not sure if the battery has damaged. Few days ago and until now I attached the battery with ac adapter plugged in, and it charged until full. Then i disconnected the ac power, now the machine powered by battery and it still go for about 1 hour.
But, if i unplugged the ac power quiet long (half day maybe) with the battery still attached then i turn on the machine (with battery power) it won't turn on. I have to unpack the battery, pack it again, plug AC power and it will turn on.

Batteries are consumable items. They degrade both by use and time. T60 is an old model and there is nothing strange about the battery going bad (unless it's new). This happens specially if at some point the battery discharged fully and stayed that way for some time. Lithium is reactive and corrodes the poles inside the battery and when this happens, it begins to release copper and short out. This process is irreversible. The battery may appear to charge as normal but it's already damaged and will cause the computer to turn off suddenly, not to turn on with the battery installed, etc.

The computer has built-in safety measures against shorts and such and that is what causes the problem.

thank you for all response.

I think you're all right, it's time to get new battery. But there are many suggestion how to treat battery. Some say, don't use battery power as long as there is AC power, to extend battery life. Other say don't use battery power until it totally empty. any suggestion which advise is better?

I prefer to set my charge thresholds so the battery doesn't begin to charge until it reaches 50% and stops at 90%, this assures the battery isn't constantly being charged and once every six months I perform a gauge reset that cycles the battery down to 0% and charges it back upto 100% and resets the max cap to its current state. As a result the battery I've been using in this machine (my workhorse) has a full charge level of 75.85wh of 84.24 design cap and cycle count of 37 and I've been using the battery since January 2007 with the laptop running 24/7.

If I let the laptop constantly top off the charge this battery would have failed years ago most likely.

Your mileage will vary
