Upgrading Intel mini-pci w/modem II

Recently my high rate mini pci w/modem II lost connectivity and I attempted to replace the card with a standard b/g mini pci card. After rebooting, it stated that the card was illegal and wouldn't work. Is there some way to hack into the bios and change the binary so that any standard card will work. It appears that IBM has the corner on replacement parts.
