Thinkpad X1 Carbon arrived!

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Sun Sep 02, 2012 8:38 am

You need not be scared as even though it is light, thiun and powerful, it is still a Thinkpad, chicklet keyboard included! In fact the keyboard is rather a pleasant surprise and much nicer than I had expected coming from a W series. Even the screen is very nice and the backlit keyboard is even better than having the LED light at the top of the screen.

Also the trackpad is the nicest I have ever used. It work like a trackpad is surposed to!

No lack of power either, the I7 does PS6, Qucikbook, AutoCad and Ms Office with ease, even with the 4gb RAM.

I am also glad to see that the X1 was removed from the "other/non Thinkpad hardware", like it or not the "future" IS here and I am pretty happy with what Lenovo came up with!

Lenovo hasn't really broken much new ground with the X1, but they executed well. I agree the touch pad is very usable.

Wonder why it is that of all the folks using the various fora, only one single person was fortunately enough to have received his x1c?

One would think that at least a handful, or just a smaller number of folks, would have received their x1c all at roughly the same time, right? After all, Lenovo is a big company!

Strange product introduction, if there ever was one...for such a "hot product"!

Got mine 1 week ago. My only complaint is the display, I can see a screen window effect going on.. Greg, you too?

I can not believe that Lenovo picked only ME to have a X1C. I know I did order within minutes of them opening up the orders for the X1C.

The more I use the more I like. I smile, big time, every time I close the lid and pick it up. Hard to believe they got this packed into such a small light package.

I think they are having problems with i7 chip. They pulled that option out within a week (and raised the prices) -- I used the IBM shareholder site. I ordered mine (i7) on 8/16 with an est ship date of 8/26. When it didn't arrive, I emailed Lenovo and then they replied with non-availability of a 'certain' part. Now, the new est ship date is 9/16. :(

Update on the display:
I calibrated the display with the windows utility, and WOW what a difference. before it looked washed out, and the colors were bad ... after it's much deeper, warmer,.. looks great. Total difference if you adjust the gamma and the colors. Big difference!

Thanks for the tip, I did not even know that Windows had such a utility. I was VERY happy with my screen before the calibration but must admit the change after calibration is quite pleasing.

Thanks Sir

Where do you find this calibration utility?

I am not in front of my Carbon but I think it is in the Window utilities, think I found it in the Control panel. You could do a search for screen color calibration

Right click the desktop in win7, go to personalize, on the left click display.. and then you will see it on the lift. Great difference, screen looks washed out before, after its perfect.

Greg: I'm surprised that you find the screen really nice. Can you perhaps expand on your impression? I recieved my X1 Carbon last week, and although I think it's a really sweet, high-end machine, I find the screen only barely accaptable. The nice resolution aside, this is a TN panel with so-and-so viewing angles and color reproduction (gets better with ajustment, I can confirm that). But the most abysmal thing is the high dot pitch - I find it that you can clearly see the black space between the pixels with the naked eye. What is your opinion on this Greg?

Another thing is the trackpad. It has been highly praised by reviewers and users alike, and although I find it very responsive, the double tap usually causes the cursor to "jump" away from whatever I'm trying to push. Anyone else have this problem? Greg? Anyone who perhaps know of a software solution?

Just to be clear: I'm not trying to troll the X1C or anything. I bought one myself and I think it's a nice machine. I'm just trying to get some opinions from other users. I simply can't understand why Lenovo went to all the trouble of designing one of the nicest laptops ever made and then put a very mediocre screen into it - Isn't that like making a Ferrari and then putting cheap tires on it? Why not a nice ISP panel? I don't get it. Are my expectations just to high and this TN panel in reality fine?

Cheers guys!

Sincerely,
Mads

IPS takes more power so its bad for battery life. And probably may be thicker.

The X1 Carbon display is much better than the x300 panel. Lenovo did listen. If you would have a IPS panel and 2-3 hours battery life, no one would be happy, too :)

From the reviews I see that the X1 Carbon display does not flicker so much, and that is very good.

Both are true (also heavier). I'd still rather have IPS, though. My X32 with IPS panel consistently gets 3-4 hours on battery, compared to 4-5 it may have been getting with non-IPS. Most people would be able to live with that tradeoff.

Of course, I understand that thickness and weight would have been a detriment to Lenovo's positioning of the X1 Carbon as the ultra-slim ultra-light laptop. I do not criticize them for this decision. :)

I had this problem as well until I downloaded the current Win 7 x64 drivers and tweaked the settings to my liking - problem cleared right up. Best touch pad I've used, in my opinion. This trackpoint isn't my favorite, but maybe I've just gotten used to the action on the Latitude I was using.
