Low Volume on Thinkpad SL500

Many times, even cranked to full volume I am stuck with sound levels that are barely audible. This is a problem with about 75% of the material I try, the other 25% has levels that are fine, so I think its an issue of not having enough gain. With the right source, the sound is plenty loud, and impressively crisp for laptop speakers. Anyone else running into this problem or know of a solution?
