ThinkPad T22 Project

#1 Post by chzuck » Mon Sep 10, 2012 3:32 pm

I was given a ThinkPad T22 with a completely bare HD. I installed W2kPRO and downloaded drivers from Lenovo.
I have 2 problems that I cannot seem to solve.
1. I cannot access the Internet. I think I am missing the ethernet driver, but I don't know what
ethernet card I have. How can I find out?
2. The default monitor is installed, 16 color 800 x 600. I have unable to find out how to change this to the LCD screen that it has.

Could sure use some help here.

Hi there...welcome to the forum!

1. You might be able to tell using "quick path" with your machines seven character type number. Best way, though, is open the cover on the bottom of the laptop and lay eyes on the adapter.

2. You'll need to install the video driver and possibly the display .inf files to get the native rez from win2K.

As you may already know, all your drivers are here:

You will definitely have to install the video drivers, and adjust for best image. "Control panel" then select "display" then "settings" tab. This is the Xp ver, but 2K should be the same or very similar. I have 2K on a T21, so if there is a problem I can double check.

As for the either net problem, it's the same here, still can't get it to work. Using a PCMCIA wifi card for access.

Not all T2x units had an Ethernet card, some were shipped with modem only.

It can be replaced with a combo modem/LAN card, though.

What is the full 7-character model number of that T22, 264?-???

SUCCESS! Once I found out what adapter I had, I got the correct driver for the Ethernet card, then downloaded the correct video driver and = Presto, it all came together. Thanks for all the help!

How much does a battery cost for these laptops? Mine won't hold a charge, so I just use the AC adapter.

Congrats!

A battery will run about $25-30. When shopping, look for a T30 battery. They will fit your T22, but have a slightly higher capacity than the original T22 bateries.

Unfortunately due to my dumbness, I had to do a complete re-install and now I have another unidentified item on the list that I have not been able to find. Below is the problem.

So...are you looking for the driver for the LT WinModem or is it something else that is missing?

I don't really know. I copied and pasted what the unknown device identifier gave for that yellow question mark in the hardware device manager called other devices, PCI Serial Port. That is what has me confused, I don't really know what driver I am looking for.

Look in Device Manager and see if the modem driver is installed. If it's not, that's probably what you are looking for. If it is, then we need to identify the hardware by doing the following:

1. Go to Device Manager and double click on the unknown hardware.
2. Go to "Details" tab, choose "Hardware Ids" from the dropdown list.
3. In the "Value" box below, take the longest line (most likely the first) and post it here.

Do this for all unknown hardware.

On my device manager I do not have a details tab. I am running W2k
I deleted the unknown devices and rebooted the computer and they came back as listed below.
-Multimedia audio controller
-PCI serial port

I'd venture a guess that you need a:

a) chipset driver

b) audio driver

Good luck.

Well, I got the audio driver and the other problem is the modem driver. I have DSL, so I don't need that. I tried a couple of drivers, but they did not work, so for now I am giving up.

If I only had the original disk for the laptop, I could have avoided all this.

I know what your saying. Even though I don't think I've ever used the modem in a ThinkPad, it still bugs me when I don't have all the drivers installed, and all my hardware is functional.

Did you try this modem driver?

Yes, I tried that one and I get errors and it will not install.

How well does Windows XP SP3 run on the T22 Thinkpad?

XP SP3 will run, but slow as molasses!
There is an FLP-version of XP out, you need to dig deep to find it.
That will run fine on your oldie, although W2K will run better.
As to the modem, it is probably faulty.
Since you don't need it anyway, I would just remove it and be done with it.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the input. That is what I will do with the modem. No use plaguing myself over something I don't need.

I tried find that XP version. I guess I did not dig deep enough, I could not come up with it and am pretty happy with the way W2k is currently running on the old laptop. I am using Opera, which seems to run great.

Neil,
I tried installing that driver that you suggested again and this time it worked and it was the one. I discovered what I was doing wrong. At first I could not get my Ethernet working properly and I was downloading the drivers from my other computer onto a USB stick and transferring the files that way. When you do that somehow not all the file gets transferred. So, this time I downloaded the file directly unto the laptop and followed the directions and it worked. Getting this old laptop up and running has been a big learning curve for me, but it has been fun and there is tons of info on the net. I have W2k fully updated with all the hotfixes and other updates and it seems to run fine.
To anyone looking for all the updates I have a link listed below.
