IBM Thinkpad T40

#1 Post by SCJACA » Fri Sep 14, 2012 1:40 pm

Hello all,

I have purchased my first IBM Thinkpad... The T40.

With a 1500mhz processor, 1gb RAM and a poor 40gb HD.

I wish to upgrade it, so I would be ever so grateful if somebody could confirm whether the item I wish to buy will work? And if the process I have in mind is correct.

First off I wish to upgrade the HD, I was thinking of this one;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Free-shipping ... 2575444945

Would this work? Also am I right in saying this is as simple as replacing the HD (Like this example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09tic8TzQPg) And then installing Windows XP on it?

Secondly I wish to update the RAM to 2x1gb. Am I right in saying I need to purchase some RAM with the following specifications PC2700 333mhz 200pin?

Thank you

Jose

Welcome to the forum!

The linked WD hard drive will work just fine. Install XP, download System Update from Lenovo's website, run the program and it will take care of the driver installation for you.

T40 will take either PC2100 (DDR266) or PC2700 (DDR333) 200-pin laptop RAM.

Happy upgrading.

Thank you for your help.

WD certainly would be a good buy.

Could you advise me on this one?

Specs seem to be the same... Sure only 160gb compared to the 250gb. But considering I don't have to pay VAT where I am, £34 is very tempting?

The Samsung is one fast, quite HDD that would work just fine in your T40. If it has enough space for you, it's the one to get.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I like Samsung, but the newer generation HM160HC drives have been failing left and right. Make sure that it has warranty remaining...
