hard drive size compare: x31 v. x23

#1 Post by Cholly » Tue Apr 26, 2005 1:55 am

I am thinking of buying an X30 or X31 (used or refurbed) and popping in the hard drive from my X23.

Would that work? Do all those machines (X23, X30 and X31) have the same size drive bay?

thanks

Carlos

Yes, they both take standard 2.5" drives.

Also, if you are thinking between the X30 and the X31, don't. Pay the extra money and get the X31, it is vastly superior in every respect. It has discrete video (vs the integrated on the X30), the P-M processor is much faster than the P3-M, while at the same time using less energy (so better battery life). Also, the 1.2 P3-M cannot be upgraded any further, while the X31 can be upgraded, provided you dont mind the extra heat. Finally, the USB2 and Firewire ports are a very nice addition, you wont need to use PCMCIA cards for any fast peripheral like an external HD).

You can find some good X31 deals in the forum or on Ebay right now. If you update your details with your location I might be able to direct you to some very cheap places for an X31 (at least in Europe)

"Pay the extra money and get the X31"

Thanks, Stavros!

Excellent advice!

Of the features you mention (that X31 has and X30 does not), the USB 2 ports are alone a reason to go with the X31 (especially useful in a tiny machine that needs connectivity).

That was the main reason why I swapped my X24 for an X31. However, since I use Linux (works perfectly on the X31 btw), the CPU speed (for compiling) and the graphics card (for 3d acceleration) made it also immediately apparent that it was worth the extra cash.

Lets not forget that the X32 is coming very soon (if not already out), so there should be an even further reduction in X31 prices.

Still, please try to update your profile with location, I am sure if you do many forum members will direct you to the best offers you can find for X31s

X30 continues as a line?

Oh, I didn't realize the X40 line and X30 line will continue to be developed independently. What's the dif? My X22 has no CD, which suited me fine (lightness was paramount).

Oh, happy to, thanks for the tip.

PS even an x31 without any hard drive would be great, and refurbed or even used would be okay.

My X22 is pretty beat, and the x31 with which I hope to replace it will be a 2nd machine (my main machine is a T41) for use as a back up and to take while bicycling.

The main diffs are:

X40 series is a little lighter and smaller.
X40 series takes 1.8" drives (ie no 7k60 here), the X30 series takes standard 2.5" drives.
X40 series has MMC-SD slot, X30 series has CF slot
X30 series uses standard P-M, X40 uses LV or ULV P-M
None has optical drive without the Ultrabase
My X22 is pretty beat, and the x31 with which I hope to replace it will be a 2nd machine (my main machine is a T41) for use as a back up and to take while bicycling.
Exactly my setup, with an SXGA+ T42 as a main machine
