3g ant lenght, only wire?

#1 Post by m-blue » Tue Sep 18, 2012 7:55 am

Hi,

Is it possible to use only wire as antenna in not WWLAN-ready T410? I have SIM socket, but there is no antenna inside. I was wondering will it works with only cable connected as antenna? What will be with GPS, is it works on 3G ant, or ant is on minipci?

regards,

Michal

I'm no RF expert, but I would guess no. First of all the proper antennas have quite an intricate design, and I doubt that a simple wire can perform anywhere near that. Second, you will have to come up with a way to connect the wire to the tiny u.FL sockets anyways.

You can always buy an WWAN antenna kit on eBay or here in this forum and install them yourselves. Alternatively, you can buy generic antennas for very cheap on eBay, and put them in a convenient location (say, under the access door). The signal with these generic antennas probably can't match official antennas, but will be much better than any wire.

No, just wire won't work. The aerial is a device which is tuned to work at WiFi frequencies and uses special ultra thin coaxial cables and connectors to conntect to a wifi card.

Go on eBay and type in "wifi aerial" and you'll see lots of cable and aerial assemblies from lots of laptops, any of which will do.
