W500 shuts down with more than 1 hour on battery

#1 Post by Cola » Wed Sep 19, 2012 5:22 am

Hi all.

I bought a Thinkpad W500 Type 4061-2JG yesterday for 130$.

I fixed the broken USB port which was shorting the system, by straightening out the pins so they don't touch anything, and thereby don't short anything.

Anyway, I got it running with Windows 7 Professional x64, but everytime I charge it and I disconnect the charger from it, it only runs on the battery for about 10 mins before shutting down, even though both Windows' battery meter and Lenovo Power Manager tells me it has got 1 hour and 16 mins or something like that left.

When the original battery is inserted, windows tells me to change it, as it's simply used up. I have got another unoriginal one with FRU92P1127 rated at 11.1V and 4400mAh.

What to do here?
Regards; Frederik.

Okay, little update here.

I downloaded Core Temp to measure the CPU temperature. It was at 55-65ºC (Max. is 105ºC), when I disconnected the AC Adapter, two minutes went past with no problems, then the Core temperatures rose sharply. Suddenly it said 67ºC, then 73ºC, then 78ºC. I got those three numbers within 10 seconds.

So my theory is that this is definitely a battery issue.

Any of you know what this could be? My guess would be that when I pull the cord and it has to run on battery power, the battery heats rapidly or something. Don't know. But seems odd that the CPU heats up as well.. :?

Sounds good, if you were to be more specifik, where in North Jutland? :)

I'm from Eastern Jutland; Postcode 8680, but I'll definitely contact you if I'm going there. Image

Anyway, I've got an original Lenovo battery as well, but it only lasts for 5 minutes or so, and Windows tells me that I need to replace it.

That one could be defective too. Have you tested it with another laptop?

Nope, haven't had an opportunity to test in another laptop yet, as I've only got the W500 and my T43p atm. :?
