Thinkpad X60, SATA3 SSD in SATA1 Slot ?

#1 Post by lambch0ps » Wed Sep 19, 2012 5:56 am

Hey, im looking to upgrade my thinkpad with an SSD, but I heard that the thinkpads x60 only have SATA1 support as well as support for a maximum of 3GBs of usable RAM.

The thing is, I understand that I wouldnt be able to utilise the complete bandwith, but would a SATA3 drive work on the SATA1 Slot ?

Something like this :

Would it be recognised and would it 'work' in the conventional sense ?

Also, I understand that the Thinkpad x60 is also limited to DDR2 ram, but can I insert DDR3 RAM anyways ?

For some reason DDR2 Ram seems to be more expensive than DDR3 Ram.

That's correct.

Nope, they may look similar but DDR3 RAM doesn't physically fit in a DDR2 RAM slot

Unfortunately I cannot comment about a SATA-3 working without problems in a SATA-I Thinkpad. Physically it's the same connector and I guess the drives are backwards compatible, but I did never try :(

Hope this helps...

Yes that should work. Don't expect r/w speed to be anywhere near 520 MB/s, it'll be closer to 120-145 MB/s which is still significantly faster than a HDD. The nice thing is if you ever upgraded the SSD will come in handy.

Yes, a SATA3 drive will work in a SATA1 slot. I have a SanDisk Extreme SSD (SATA3) in my X60 tablet and it works fine.

Thanks for youre replies guys. Too bad that DDR2 ram seems to be relatively expensive. On the other hand though, I probably wont need to buy much more of it after upgrading this laptop. :D

Cheers.
