What is the output voltage/amps for the X40's AC adapter?
What is the output voltage/amps for the X40's AC adapter?
Hi,
I bought an X40 that came without an AC adapter. Was wondering if I could use the AC adapter from my 240X, which is a similar ultraportable type model from IBM. Can anyone who has an original X40 AC adapter please tell me the output voltage and amps listed on the back of the adapter?

You can safely use the old IBM one. It's likely the 56W model which will be just fine.

You can read the voltage and current ratings on the bottom labels of your X40. The voltage should be 16 volts. Multiply voltage and current to get power.
Then, check the label of your current AC adapter. As long as the voltage is the same, and the power rating of the adapter is same or higher than the power of the computer, you can use it.

Any of the many IBM adapters will work, as long as it has 16 VDC output and 56W/3.36A or 72W/4.5A.
Original ones are readily available in our Market forum or on eBay.
All newer machines, from T60/R60/X60/Z61 onwards, have 20VDC/4.5A and 90W (or more).
Some newer [non-Thinkpad series] machines have 19VDC for some strange reason.

The machines are very tolerant to different voltages, as well. I recall someone put 12VDC into an X41, and it played nice (though it wasn't sufficient to charge it and run it at the same time). ~16V around 3-4 amps will make it happy. It is all being regulated down, anyway.

Shifting gears here, any concerns with buying an original unused Thinkpad battery that is 7 years old? I found a seller that has a few of the original IBM 4-cell batteries for the X40 that are unused and still sealed however they were manufactured 7 years ago.
Re: What is the output voltage/amps for the X40's AC adapter?
Should be OK...batteries do deteriorate over time, whether in use or not. But similar ones I've purchased have worked well.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E
Re: What is the output voltage/amps for the X40's AC adapter?
The older 35W adapter (2.2A) will probably also work for the X-series. That's probably what he has from his 240X. Probably wouldn't be enough for one of the 14-15" models.RealBlackStuff wrote:Any of the many IBM adapters will work, as long as it has 16 VDC output and 56W/3.36A or 72W/4.5A.
