Slow WiFi, well, downloads anyway....

#1 Post by jonwhite » Fri Sep 21, 2012 6:19 pm

I have a fibre connection into the house. 100Mb down and 10Mb up. I tend to get around 40-50Mb over WiFi but I've noticed my x121e seems to get only about 2Mb down now (though oddly still gets nearly 10Mb up). On a wired connection it's 99Mb and my 2 year old Toshiba Netbook gets 40Mb down happily enough. This was definitely working a while ago and I think that the only significant change is a consumer preview install of Windows 8. Since the Tosh is running the same this seems an unlikely culprit but possible. Does anyone have any thoughts or pointers?

thanks in advance

Yeah, get rid of W8, it is still in its infant shoes.
M$ latest and greatest is not so great at all, why can't people wait until Service Pack 1 is out before they even consider a new OS?
Are you USING your laptop for useful stuff, or are you just looking for bragging rights?

Thanks for the suggestion RBS but it's about as useful as a chocolate coffee pot. I use latest tech at work (it's a work policy and keeps us ahead of the competition) and I have Win8 on 2 personal machines. This is the only one I'm having problems with and this is the only problem - and it's only on download speed for WiFi, upload speed and wired speed are unaffected. Working with tech early helps us to work through these issues. As for why anyone else would want to use Win8? It's faster than Win 7, actually pretty good overall (especially the new networking and security features) and you get access to the new UX apps. If you don't work in tech you might want to stick with the OS your PC came with but if you do work in tech trying to stay at the back of the queue for new stuff puts you at a disadvantage.

Try another wifi card?
Uninstall the card in Device manager and let W8 (re-)install the driver?

Cheers, I tried the uninstall route. I'm wondering if downgrading the drive version would help but I can only find the latest versions for W7 online. I need to open this with Lenovo I think :)

Which will get you absolutely nowhere since you're not running the OS that the machine came with...
