Frankenpad Mysteriously Dies - ???

#1 Post by bmwman91 » Tue Sep 25, 2012 8:38 pm

I was sitting on the couch using the heavily modded Thinkpad listed in my signature when it just up & died. It just shut itself off, no smoke, no noises, just blacked out. It was on AC power. Not even the power status lights are lit up when the AC adapter is plugged in. It is effectively bricked 100%.

I had an eBay CPU poop out on me a few years ago, but the thing wasn't this dead. Could a vreg have gone south? I assume that not having any power status LEDs functioning means that not even the BIOS / system controller is getting juice. Weird...and a sad way for my Frankenpad to die after all these years, not to mention copious amounts of money being poured into it!

What could have died? Looks like I may be getting an X1 Carbon sooner than anticipated lol.

Phew...nevermind. I dug out my spare AC adapter from the bottom of the closet and gave that a try. It would seem that all is well. Windows just didn't bother to inform me that I was at 0% battery life lol...I guess the AC adapter is dead! Phew...I was not really prepared to drop the cash for an X1 Carbon anyway...for that price I could get a totally decked-out T430s!

I feel like this is right up-there with stories about people calling tech support to report that their computer's cup holder stopped functioning!

Hehe...guess it's always a good idea to wait a few minutes, and try a few diagnostics, before posting on a forum. I'll have to keep that in mind. :thumbs-UP:
