So... I've had my X41 Tablet for a month, decided to join...

Finally broke down and got an x41t for artsy purposes, and figured I'd join the forums. I've had this thing for a month, all in all, pretty fun little laptop, and although both batteries are from 2005 it STILL gets better battery time then my Acer Aspire 7741 does. (I know, the Acer runs circles around the tablet, but it's a bit big to be carrying around to restaurants and other places) I officially love the Wacom tablet. I had a friend's bamboo, and while it was neat to play with, not being able to look at the pen and the monitor at the same time was a hassle... Not so much with this thing.

Got the computer, the dock, normal battery, extended battery, hard drive/caddy, and pen, all for like $120, free shipping, I think it was... Not too bad, it even has the tablet COA, so on the happenstance I find some x41 recovery CD's

I've tried a few different operating systems on it... XP image disc I had lying around from I don't even know where (think it was from my old dell, LOL), couldn't get it to take the key at the bottom, ah well. I've had Ubantu, and xubantu (not sure which one I'd go back to), DSL linux, and what it has on it now, dual boot windows 8 (chokes) and android x86 (which I'd use, and tell windows where It could go, if the tablet wouldn't crash on sleep, and read from the SD card.)

The Art rage demo works well, even on horrid windows 8, though Youtube skips something fierce if I want to watch it in windows 8 mode (Netflix? Your kidding, right?), and everything else I've tried seems to play nice, if slow.

Two questions, though... I've tried burning install dvds, sticking them into the dock, and no matter what OS I try to use, it won't detect a bootable disc. Thank goodness for jumpdrives, but if I pay $90+ for second hand Lenovo boot discs, I want to be able to use the dock to install them.

Second question...what OS would you all recommend, I've seen mixed reviews between XP, 7 and Linux being optimal, just trying to decide how much more money ti's worth putting in thsi thing when x60's are not that expensive.

but, hey, it's been fun to play with, and I'll be able to give the more powerful laptop to the parents for Christmas.

Welcome to the forum!

If you still have the original hard drive, stick with XP, W7 will be *very* slow.

You need XP Tablet Edition for that machine, not a conventional retail XP. You may want to post a WTB (want to buy) ad in the Forum's Marketplace, and someone is likely to come to your rescue.

Thanks, I do have the original 1.8" molasses drive installed now, (I think my flash drive goes faster, haha) Though an SSD is definitely an upgrade I'm considering. (not sure if I'm brave enough to try the Sata hack for it...) along with maxing out the rab (either 1.5, or stuffing a 2 gb card in, like some folks have apparently done.)
Ajkula66, you've got a T43 (two, anyway!), and those are similar... does the ssd upgrade help with video playback at all? (id imagine the ram wouldn't hurt)

I used to own a X40 with a SSD, and the difference between a not-really-a-top-of-the-line-but-good-enough-SSD and that poor original HDD was night and day.

Both of my T43 units are SATA-modded, and even a conventional 7200rpm HDD makes a huge difference, let alone SSD.
