backlit keyboards

Hello,
a question to members, who have seen T430/T430s/T530/X230/X230 Tablet ThinkPads with backlit keyboards in reality: on the web, i have seen that the backlight illuminates the outlines of the keys. What i don't understand is: are the letters on top of the keys also illuminated by the backlight or does the backlight merely illuminate the outlines of the keys?

It illuminates primarily the letters, but the light is also visible around the keys when viewed at an angle.
