T400 screen turning off

#1 Post by continuum » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:57 am

Hi,
The screen on T400 (6475-FM4) keeps turning off. It seems to be somewhat linked to the movement of the lid. In addition, the indication lights below the screen are off. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?
Thanks,
Brian

a couple possible culprits come to mind, in order of most likely to least likely

LCD panel is going out
LCD ribbon cable is going out (the cable that connects the LCD panel to the motherboard)
motherboard

How often does this happen? Daily, hourly, only when you move the lid? Some of us here have spare parts on hand to help isolate the issue. If you have access to any spare parts that would work for your system, might want to start out with changing out the lcd screen.

It seems to happen when I move the screen sometimes, but then other times it will just turn off itself. The latter is usually after a few hours of being on. The indicator lights went off about a week ago, but came back on the other day and then went again. I found that when it goes off, if I move the screen so it's flat with the laptop, it'll work.

Do you have the part number for the ribbon cable?

Forgot to say, I've no spare parts for it unfortunately.

Cool, thanks. I think I know which one mine is, but I'll confirm later when I get my screen FRU. I'm hoping the cable will sort the issues.
