T61: Shutdown or Sleep does a Restart instead

#1 Post by kstuart » Fri Oct 12, 2012 1:43 pm

I think this problem started after I successfully flashed the BIOS with the Middleton BIOS (but it could be something else, as I am doing a lot of customizing, since I only received the T61 a few days ago).

Everything else is just fine.

If I select "Shutdown" in Windows, it restarts. If I close the lid, it restarts.

Thanks for any help !

Check the Power Management settings.

Maybe there is a BSOD during shutdown/standby, and Windows automatically rebooted as a result. Disable this automatic restart and try again, see whether any error messages come up during shutdown/standby.

Things I've done or checked:

- Wake Up on LAN is disabled in BIOS
- Automatic Restart in Windows is now off
- I tried removing the battery (since Lenovo PM complains about it not being authentic, even though it charges fine)

and still the same.

On shutdown, it seems to get all the way off - and then turns on as if a ghost were pressing the power button. :)

I also recently installed Lenovo Thinkpad Power Manager and drivers, and Hotkeys and drivers.... I suppose I could try uninstalling all of them...

I found two other guys with the same problem, who seem to have registered here mostly to ask about this problem:

A web search showed one person with something similar who - shock! - actually posted what worked for him:

He cleared the BIOS CMOS settings.

This would make some sense given that I just flashed the BIOS...

After you flash the BIOS, you should always load the new BIOS default values, by hitting F1 at boot, and then F9 and F10.
I've done hundreds of BIOS updates, and this comes automatically to me, so I didn't even think of mentioning it...
And it would have been the power mgmt settings in the BIOS, as well as those in Windows.

My 2gb memory arrived, so I used the opportunity to pull out the CMOS battery plug, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

Then when I started it, I set the BIOS settings to default, changed one or two things, saved and let it boot.

Still starts up a second after shutdown.

Any other suggestions ?
