Got some Qs T61p/T500

#1 Post by arty_harvy » Fri Oct 12, 2012 7:26 pm

Hey guys. Forgive me if this has been answered already, but I am having trouble finding any info.

1. I would like to install a T500 palmrest on my T61p as I assume the flush mounted mouse pad will be easier to use. I have read that one of the screw holes/standoffs is shorter on the T500 palmrest. Thoughts/comments?

2. I am wanting to install a T500 webcam on my T61p. What parts will be required if at all possible?

3. I plan on installing a T500 heat sink fan in my T61p heat sink.

What other parts may be compatible between the 2 machines?
X201: i5-560M, 8GB 1066Mhz, Intel 320, 300GB, Intel GMA, 1280x800
T410s: i5-540M, 8GB 1333Mhz, Intel X18-M 160GB/1TB, NVS 3100M, 1440x900
W520: i7-2960XM, 32GB 1600Mhz, Intel 520, 240GB/1TB, 2000M, 1920x1080
W700: QX-9300, 16GB 1333Mhz, Momentus XT 750GB RAID 0, FX 3700M, 1920x1200

This is possible between T400 and 14.1" widescreen T61, but as far as I know it's far more complicated with the T500/T61.

Not possible, the bezel is different as is the lcd ribbon cable

It can be done, but there is no conclusive evidence it will cool better, the T61p is one of the best heatsinks you can get in there and it actually fits properly, I wouldn't advise trying to for another part in just because it's newer. A properly seated T61p heatsink is a very efficient cooling system, give it some Arctic Silver #5 thermal paste and you'll have all the cooling you need.

The german thinkwiki has some info about modding the T500 palmrest to fit a T61, but seems like a lot of work for nothing, as it includes cutting off some of the "stand-offs" and relocating them, and cutting the plastic to make it fit the different sized ports... seems like a crazy thing to do, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks man. My plan is to continue to use the T61p heat sink, but swap just the fan itself from the T500.

Thanks for all the other info. Ill do some research into the palmrest mod.
