This is slightly related to my other thread and overheating, but I thought I'd start a new thread.
When using TPFanControl, I see fan speeds of 0-7, 64 and 128. Inputting these speeds manually, I find that 0-7 are off (0) through a fairly low speed (7). Speed 64 is much faster than 7. Speed 128 is..... very slow, maybe equivalent to speed 3. ??
Is this normal? Is 128 a valid fan speed and if so, should it be faster than 64? I do see 128 shown when the CPU is very hot and I set TPFan to the "BIOS" setting, with the fan running at a slow speed.
Just curious, mainly. After cleaning the fan, the temps are VERY reasonable with either TPFan or the OS in control. I'm not running TPFan because under OS control the fan never shuts off and the machine stays even cooler.... which has to be easier on it.

Re: X61s fan speeds
I have a X61s. The fan goes up to about 5900rpm in mode '7' in linux in windows it's about the same.
but some times the fan spins faster or slower - i clean the fan with a vacuum cleaner every 1-2months.
I really suggest that. it REALLY helps.
however, The x61s can't be compared with a X60 (T7200) or a X61 (T7100) - it's way cooler.
normal temperatures are about 42c normal use is about 52c.
don't mind what the speed of the fan is. the important is to get the dust out of the fan. use the vacuum cleaner and blow out the dust. it's up to you if you want to put something small so the fan won't spin - i've broken my X60 fan that way. attach the vacuum cleaner to the left of the fan where the blowout is.

Re: X61s fan speeds
Fan control for Thinkpads under Linux is provided by two pieces of software:
1. the thinkpad_acpi kernel module, which provides access to the temperature and RPM sensors, as well as speed control.
2. the thinkfan application which provides temperature-based fan control though a config file.
