W520 Parts Lookup help to ID/confirm the Nvidia 2000M

#1 Post by eecon » Fri Oct 19, 2012 7:32 pm

Can anyone tell from the parts lookup listing posted below for a Lenovo Outlet Refurbed W520 4270CTR delivered today if it truly has/had the 2000M Nivida graphics (it originally was a 4270CTO as listed on the shipping box label) ..... it has the 1600x900 display that I wanted and the pricing was about a hundred smackers under a grand ...... plus, on Lenovo's Warranty Lookup using the S/N on the box it shows it has Depot warranty until April 24, 2014 (over 18 months rather than the standard Outlet 12 months). There was a misprint typo on the Outlet specs page as listed showing its i7-2760QM incorrectly having 8MB of L3 Cache rather than the true 6MB and I my Lenovo sales rep said I can RMA it right back to them w/o a 15% restock charge because of the typo and they would also pay for return shipping. Lenovo was also quick to correct the typo across all their units listed with an i7-2760QM for sale which was nice of them (at my suggestion to condsider doing that).

I have not opened the box yet as I'm debating whether to keep it, if in fact the warranty is actually 18 months on an Outlet product and it truly has the 2000M (it was the only 1600x900 screen I've seen in a long time that had listed a 2000M .... all the others are only the 1000M and now priced higher than mine since I ordered it just 6 days ago). I also have a second W520 with FHD and the 2000M due for delivery on Monday and my plan is to clean install 32-bit Win7 on the 1600x900 with a new SSD while putting a clean Win7 64-bit install on the incoming 1920x1080p with a new SSD (also the incoming FHD unit has the slightly faster i7-2860QM with a true 8MB of L3Cache) and I scored it for only a couple hundred more that the unit received today .... both with single sticks of 4GB Ram and 500GB 7200 RPM HDDs that I'll move to the ultrabays after the reinstallations of Win7pro to the new SDDs.

UPDATE:

Looks like it did come with a 2000M from a cross-check of part numbers in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

0B01910 04W2029 PLANAR is for the Nvidia 2000M with AMT, TPM and no-RAID adapter while 04W2028 PLANAR would be for the equivalent equipped 1000M (AMT, TPM and no-RAID adapter).

So far so good.

Don't be surprised if you check again in a couple months and see that your warranty has been reduced to a year. When we bought a T410 for my wife from the outlet we thought we got a great deal and when I looked up the warranty, it had 2.5 years remaining. Fantastic I thought. Then we checked it before selling it a month later (long story) and it had been reduced to 11 months remaining - matching the 1 year promised by the outlet.

That said, it looks like a nice deal, congrats!

Thanks for the alert wolfman ..... I've never heard that before. I'll try to get the warranty confirmation in writing from my Lenovo rep who's also handling other W520 and dock presently enroute (that unit only has the standard 12 month warranty). I did call Tech Support and they insisted the 18 months remaining is good for the duration as it was a paid upgrade from the original buyer when they configured the CTO unit 6 months ago when sold new.

Plus others I know who bought units with anywhere from 14 to 17 months remaining from the Outlet never had that happen to them (all recently within the last 2 years).

BTW, this unit also has the Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 option which was not listed on the original sales listing and thus a pleasant surprise.

Thanks again for the heads-up.
