hello all
working to bring a laptop (non-thinkpad) back to life. apparently, at some point, it was attacked by a virus that would cause the OS to freeze up after a few minutes of use
my first move was to try to wipe the hard drive clean, which i did via linux by mounting the HD on another machine (usb). the hard drive seems to work ok and was wiped clean without problems
i then tried to install a fresh copy of XP pro but i can't get it to get past even the first reinstall/repair menu. before i get to select anything it throws up BSOD with the 0x0000007B error
having that door closed on my face, i installed a lightweight Linux distro (crunchbang) which went on without a problem. after that i tried to once again load the windows install disc but that resulted in the BSOD all over again.
the computer seems to be working perfect with linux but i really need XP on it.
any ideas??? please tell me there's a way around this
thanks

Re: help with 0x7b error on XP install
If it has a SATA hard disk, you will need to separately load SATA drivers from a floppy or USB stick when asked at the beginning of the install (looks like: press F6 to install other drivers).
Vista or W7 have SATA drivers built-in.
You could also check if that BIOS has a SATA option: AHCI or Compatibility.
If so, set it to Compatibility.
