Give it a go. But considering the ATI board has a different chipset (i think) it probably wont work.

It most likely will work just fine. All you'll have to do is update the graphics driver.

The supposedly proper process for changing desktop graphics card is:

1. Uninstall old card driver
2. Swap the hardware
3. Install the new driver

It's probably not absolutely necessary on either desktops nor Thinkpads, but given the minimal effort it might be worth doing in order to stay safe rather than sorry.

Agreed 1001%, especially if XP wasn't installed from the recovery disks.

It's only the screen that changes.
As long as the 'receiving' machine has an ATI GPU, it will work without any XP alterations.

Ye, but ianf's question about reinstall and mentioning of "straight swap" leads one to think he might also be doing a HDD swap, in which case it's relevant.

Besides, Ajkula agreed with me onethousand and one percent 8)

Ah...
I didn't reread the whole thread and all the new posts that had been added.
+1 for swapping the drivers as per Orclas.

ianf, I have a ThinkPad T43 with 15 inch screen and an ATI X300 integrated graphic chip in it which I am currently typing on. I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 and I have a disc I created from I386 folder on the root drive "C:\ or C:\Windows\", I forgot which one it is and it is over 500MB. See link below how to create a bootable Windows XP disc otherwise let me know so I can physically mail you a disc or e-mail you a link to a ISO file.

thanks to all

thanks keyholefor the offer of boot disc, also others for help and comments , the whole machine is back together and working well the new cpu upgrade is ok , overall this machine feel less snappier than the old one with the 1886mhz cpu and intel graphics , but i may have had a different bios ???, although i am not certain, this one i have press escape to boot to win xp , i will get the old board to boot when i have more time and then try the sata mod there first.
one other point this fan is noisey although it really never goes flat out , i would use the old one but heatsink is very slightly different.
next job long life battery as mains power is a small problem whilst in France (i use 12v cigar type psu to charge).

best wishes ianf
