Install Win 7 on a different machine

#1 Post by i2000s » Tue Oct 23, 2012 10:09 pm

Hi,

Since I don't have an external DVD reader or docking station for my X200, I installed the system on another X61 thinkpad computer, and then migrate the harddriver to my X200 machine. The problem is that it said I need to activate the Win 7 in my X200 system. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Also, I want to upgrade the X200 laptop to Win 8 later. Will the unactivated Win 7 affect my upgrading to Win 8? Thanks.

Cheers
X31 (since 2003), X61T (2007), X200T (2009), ThinkPad Tablet 2 (2013), P50 (2016).
Considering more Thinkpads. Retiring my X200T. PM me if anyone wants to home it.
OS: Ubuntu and Windows 10.

To be honest you probably shouldn't have done that. Apart from technical issues like drivers, transferring a Windows license between computers is always a bit iffy.
It's probably easiest to install W7 on the X200 from scratch. Just use a USB drive: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mss ... vd_dwnTool

What's the license of your W7 installation? Retail or OEM?
If it's an OEM disk + COA that you purchased separately, then you're screwed because such an OEM installation is tied to the first computer it is installed on, and there's no legal way to transfer an OEM license between computers.
If you intend to use a valid W7 COA on the bottom of the machine, or if you have installed a retail copy, then there probably is some way to activate the current installation on the X200. A phone call to Microsoft may be required.
