Will CAS 3 512Mb PC100 Sodimms work on TP600E?

Will CAS 3 512Mb PC100 Sodimms work on TP600E?

#1 Post by charlieeng » Thu Apr 28, 2005 1:05 am

Has anyone tried out the PC100 512Mb CAS3 Sodimms on their TP600E/X's?

I saw another forum discussing the BIOS changes to try to support CAS 3 type memory. It would be a great enhancement for me to be able to get my laptop up to 1Gb of memory using 2 512mb modules. Has anyone tried this?

Is there a real limit to the TP600E/X to a max of 576mb? or is just a published maximum due to what has been tried out and known to work?

The Intel BX440 chipset the 600X (and other Thinkpads) is built on only supports 256MB per memory slot.

Ergo, max RAM is 576MB with the 64MB on the motherboard.

No way around this short of removing the onboard RAM and replacing it, but good luck doing that and it would still not max out at 1GB RAM but 768MB.

Thanks for your reply, I'll now quit trying for 1gb and stay with 2 256mb chips for the 512mb total. This forum has been the most helpful!!

Now Ian, you know that the 600E comes with 32MB on the motherboard vs. 64MB on the 600X.

But you have my permission to give yourself a good tongue lashing in the mirror for having shortsightedly purchased the 600E rather than the 600X.

How's the VW running?

Regards and welcome back, we've missed you,

Thanks! I've been wanting to do that for a while...!

I do come and look from time to time - as usual there are a few people who really want to try to help, but there seem to be some who come here just to argue, and frankly I've got better things to do with my time.

The VW is fine and certainly one of the better choices I've made in cars - I've been doing a lot of Toulouse-London round trips recently and it's made a HUGE difference. (Quite aside from the fact that I managed to get "flashed" on the motorway - we have 12 points on our European licences, and now I've only 11 :x and I've only been driving 28 years!)

I got back home to France on Monday afternoon to realise that I'd left my trusty T42 in London - a quick call to a friend and I had it back less than 18 hours later - it's frightening how attached one becomes to these [censored] things!!

Warmest regards
