Installing windows xp on a Lenovo R61e

#1 Post by sickness » Sun Oct 28, 2012 4:45 pm

Hi,

I am having a issue with installing windows xp, normally I don't have an issues, not like its actually hard.

Anyway I have tested both a boot-able CD and a boot-able USB on another laptop, and both works!

Now I have tried both of these on this laptop and neither works and wont boot. The bios I can only access in user mode and not supervisor mode, the password is not known - I have removed both batteries to clear the CMOS and nothing.

When trying to run the CD - It just skips it and goes to windows. I changed the "SATA Controller Mode Option" both to “Compatibility” and "AHCI".
When trying to run the USB - Just get a white flashing underscore (like if the motherboard cannot see the hdd / or windows).

I have tested these both on another laptop and booted / loaded fine.

HELP please! I have googled it, and someone on yahoo answers told me to come here... so here i am! :)

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
If you're trying to install XP, you need to load the SATA drivers from a floppy drive when Install asks: press F6 to load SCSI (or similar) drivers.
Vista or W7 have those drivers natively.
Also, in the BIOS, set SATA to "Compatibility".
For help with your BIOS password problem, contact forum member poshgeordie via PM, since you are in the UK.

I'm wondering if the boot order is set up to boot from HDD first, and since you can't get into the BIOS to change the boot order, you may be stuck. Can you choose the boot device by pressing F12 at the Lenovo splash screen?
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E
