Forum Members and Hurricane Sandy!

#1 Post by Fixed_Rider » Sun Oct 28, 2012 9:56 pm

Thought I'd start a thread to wish our fellow forum members that are in the path of hurricane Sandy all the best!
This may be a good place to keep us all up to date on your status.....power providing .....or as a place to rally the troops if assistance is required!

I know TuuS is in the path. Anyone else?

Both ajkula66 and I are in the 'path' (NE PA, ~100 miles WNW of NYC).
It's been dead quiet so far, quite eerie!

I'm just short of a mandatory evacuation area. :o

Needless to say, I'm keeping an eye on the track carefully. It's improved a bit (for my area) since last night, but not by much.

See what you get for living in Brooklyn? :D

Then again, I'd be a lying ba$tard if I didn't admit that I miss Brooklyn food in this one-horse-town...

Tell you what...I'll PM you the address of my favourite salumeria, send you a list of what to buy, and then you can come up here to camp with us... 8)...got a fresh propane tank for the grill last night, just in case...

All jokes aside, on my way to RBS's house yesterday, all I saw on the roads were lineman/bucket trucks heading in various directions, mostly electric company and tree removal services, so they were getting ready for quite some mess up here...

Have I made it to work today? Heck, no. NYC is really not the place where I want to be right now.

To quote my boss as of 6.30am this morning: "We are all expected to show up. I'm driving in. Given where you are, I don't expect you to do the same. Enjoy the *unpaid* time off with your kids."

And exactly that I shall do... :P

My gf's father is currently in New York. Last I heard he was somewhere in Manhattan which is outside the evacuation zone. Might've changed since then, the evacuation zones grow almost hourly.

I made an appointment last week for a line trouble on my analog Verizon line. The first available appointment was for today. The door bell rang 20 minutes ago. Guess who? I was as surprised as you.

Spent yesterday afternoon getting ready.

Just a little breeze and drizzle so far on the north shore of Long Island as of now.

Stay safe everyone!

Living outside/north of Scranton, PA, so far we only had some rain and a few wind gusts.
It seems we might get lucky, and the brunt of it is seems to be passing us by south of us.
6pm EST should be the height of it in my area, but I see no signs yet... (keeps all extremities crossed)
All public utilities still working :D

Better hold my comments: 5:54pm just had the first power interruption (only for a few seconds).
But lights start flickering.
Guess I'll take it easy from here on...

Monday 7:30pm: still nuffin' :)
Monday 7:53pm: 2nd power interruption. I'm getting ready for stand-by...

Today we had lots of cold rain, mild winds, but nothing remotely dangerous. About an hour or so before Georges power went out I think one of sandy's arms passed over my house, deafening winds and I half expected cows and trucks to start flying, but it passed and it's quite as a mouse now. Latest satalite images show the eye just hitting the coast of delaware, I'm pretty far inland so I'm not fearing the winds so much, but I'm not looking forward to long term outages.

My power is still on and going strong at 11:15pm EDT on the 29th, so hopefully it stays on, but what I really fear is if the fiber optic lines are taken out, they aren't considered as important as electric so I could be without internet and phone for some time... very depressing thought.

ps. thanks for all the kind messages I've received, this community really seems like a family to me, you're all great and I enjoy being a member.

Good to hear TuuS.

Getting some pretty bad reports out of NYC, tunnels flooding, transformers blowing up, etc.

My power's now out, but luckily I still have internet. I heard the very familiar sound of a transformer popping, so this won't be a quick fix especially since nearly all the workers are on the other end of the state.

Thank God for Generators.

We're 40 minutes or so northeast of Harrisburg. Gusty winds have picked up as the eye is moving just south of Harrisburg pretty close to now to 4:00 am or so. 18,000 people without power in our rural county according to PP&L. Rain has mercifully been less than expected so far. Will be interesting to see what happens once the winds change direction - going to be bad around here with falling trees and limbs.

Looks like Sandy passed by with little or no damage. I haven't been out to inspect things yet, but it's very quiet and peaceful, typical of a post hurricane area and the familiar sound of traffic has returned. I'm still without power, but pleased to have internet, so all is well and my generator will be getting a workout it seems.

Glad it's all over.

I didn't hear about the hurricane until a couple of days ago... it's definitely because I live in California, but it really kinda stings that I didn't hear about it until then. Really wish you guys the best.

Landline and internet down as well.

Just cut a fallen tree that was blocking my driveway.

PDA still up.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Still out, 10/31 5:40pm

But we have a gas fire and real fireplace in the den, and a gas stove in the kitchen, so we can cook.
And the nearby truckstop (3 miles) is good for a few other commodities.

It sounds like you are alright, RBS. Beaten up but OK.
We haven't had much news footage of your area over here. New Jersey seems to have been the hardest hit from what we can make out.
Where is the beastie now? I just hope the tail-end won't end up hitting UK and Ireland like the last one. We've had enough rain for 3 years already this year.

Because Pennsylvania is only important when it comes time to count votes in an election...no one cares about its population whatsoever...we got smacked, and then some.

My father-in-law came early this morning and evacuated the rest of the family to Brooklyn, we were at 39 degrees Fahrenheit indoors.

I remained here to hold the fort with our two cats, two finches and a colourful fish tank.

Power is back on as of 5pm, and now it's time to do some real work before going back to work in the morning...

Power came back around 7pm on Wednesday 10/31/12, only to conk out AGAIN a few minutes later.
Since about 8pm it seems to hold, the whole house is warm again after close to freezing temps...

Well, I'm posting from a Dunkin' Donuts right now (Yes, via the trusty T61), and I regret not taking George up on his offer!

I have no electricity at home, and have to throw out almost the entire contents of my fridge. Plus, I'm living by flashlight at night. Oh, and don't forget the ice cold showers...in the dark.

I don't know what I'd do without the T61, though. It's a tried and true friend through hardship.
