i'm interested in finding out how to access the factory menu f any on the t42 sxga lcd the number of hours on it. is there any way to do this? thanks

The only way that I know is to check the SMART data on the hard drive. Crystal Disk Info is a free program you can download to read the power on hours of the hard disk. Of course, this will not be of any use to you if the hard drive has ever been swapped. It may not be exactly accurate, but it will give you a good general idea.
