Replacing Fan / Heatsink and have two questions

#1 Post by ts1971 » Sat Nov 03, 2012 12:17 am

Hi,

I am in the process of reassembling my T500 after having replaced my fan and I have two questions:

(1) I realized after the fact that I applied the thermal grease to the CPU rather than to the heatsink as the directions state. Is that likely to be a big deal? Would you take the fan off, clean the grease and do it over?

(2) I forgot the write down the order in which the wireless antenna cables were attached when I unspanned the connectors. I have them, working from the left, white - grey - black, which is their orientation where they leave the body of the machine. Is that right?

Thanks!

1) The CPU die must be in contact with the hatsink and the thermal paste is just to fill the voids between them. So the correct way to apply it is to put as little as you can in the die, spread it with a plastic card as thin as you can and the apply force sightly from a side so the parts make the best possible contact. It's not right if there is a thick layer.

2) There must be a picture in Google images that shows the proper way although I don't really think it makes much difference.
